BPA Firers Training Scheme

Overview

In 2003, the British Pyrotechnists Association (BPA) introduced the Firers Training Scheme for its members and other professional display companies. The scheme was created to help establish a common standard of safety and knowledge throughout the professional firework display industry.

Course Structure

Candidates undertake a comprehensive course of training based on a detailed syllabus, followed by an examination.
Successful candidates are issued with a BPA Firer’s Identification Card, confirming that they have completed the training and passed the exam.

The Association also maintains a Register of Firers on its website, which can be checked by anyone wishing to verify the authenticity of a BPA Firer’s identification.

Commitment to Safety

The BPA is dedicated to improving safety at professionally fired firework displays — protecting both operators and the public.
The Firers Training Scheme currently includes over 1,700 registered individuals and is continuously developed to reflect new legislation, technologies, and best practices.

The training covers a broad range of essential topics, including:

  • Basic firework chemistry

  • Firework types and effects

  • Fireworks in transport

  • Rigging techniques

  • Site design

  • Firing methods

  • Fallout considerations

  • Disposal procedures

While the scheme does not replace statutory provisions (e.g. training for drivers), it provides a strong foundation for the safe and professional management of fireworks displays.

Practical Experience

Each candidate is required to maintain a logbook of display experience. This logbook serves as evidence of practical skills and varied experience, complementing the formal training received.

Course Levels

The course is available at two levels:

  • Firers – for assistant operators at display sites with limited experience

  • Senior Firers – for experienced operators who have passed the Firers level and gained extended experience

Who the Course Is Not For

The course is not suitable for, nor available to:

  • Operators firing only Category 3 fireworks

  • Freelance firers not associated with a professional company

  • Stage or theatrical technicians

City & Guilds Accreditation

The BPA is proud to announce that its Firework Courses and Examinations are accredited by City & Guilds, one of the world’s leading organisations for vocational training and assessment.

This accreditation confirms that BPA training meets nationally and internationally recognised standards, providing reassurance to both candidates and employers that the qualification represents genuine professional competence and quality.
